Could Mexico Face a Shortage of Car Models Due to Strikes in the United States?
The ongoing strike in more than 40 American plants, including those of Ford, GM, and Stellantis, does not significantly impact the availability of these brands’ cars in Mexico, according to Cristina Vázquez, Coordinator of Economic Studies at the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA). In the Mexican market, sales of Ford, GM, and Stellantis cars represent only 2.9% of the total, which is not a cause for immediate concern. Furthermore, 66% of the cars sold in Mexico are sourced from other countries, mainly China and Brazil, with only 11.4% being imported from the United States.
Mexican authorities have stated that there have been no significant economic disruptions due to the strikes in the United States, and production schedules are being met. However, the national autoparts association INA estimates that if the UAW strike in the United States continues, the impact on Mexican production could reach $280 million by the end of the week, equivalent to 0.3% of the exports to the northern neighbor in 2022.
