Rail Freight in Mexico Ends First Quarter with Growth
Railway transport in Mexico has witnessed significant growth during the first quarter of the year, as revealed by the latest report from the Operational Mexican Railway System Pulse by the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF). In total, 34.67 million tons were mobilized, marking a 3.9% increase compared to the same period last year.
The detailed analysis shows that of the total for the quarter, 10.97 million tons corresponded to domestic traffic, with an 18.8% increase, while 23.71 million tons were of international traffic, reflecting a slight decrease of 1.9%. This latter segment is divided into 18.13 million tons of imports, with a 0.9% decrease, and 5.58 million tons of exports, which experienced a 5% growth.
When compared to the same period last year, some railway companies such as Ferromex, Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) of Mexico, Ferrovalle, and Administradora de la Vía Corta Tijuana-Tecate (ADMI) recorded significant increases in tons transported, while others such as Linea Coahuila Durango (LCD) and Ferrosur saw decreases in their cargo volumes.
Despite the 15.5% year-on-year decrease in the number of loaded cars, March showed a 5.9% growth in tonnage movement, with a total of 144,059 loaded cars and 12.06 million tons transported.
This increase in railway transport in Mexico during the first quarter of the year indicates a promising outlook for the industry, highlighting the ongoing importance of this mode of transportation in the country’s national and international trade.
