TEU Movement in Mexican Ports Records Its Best Start of the Year
The operation of 20-foot containers (TEU) in Mexican ports has experienced its best start of the year in January 2024, registering a 20% increase compared to the same month the previous year. Ports on the Mexican Pacific, especially Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas, led the TEU movement, reaching a total of 728,116 TEU mobilized across 15 ports along the Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. This increase is attributed to the anticipation of cargo transportation before the Chinese New Year, which began on February 10, leading to a significant rise in container operations.
Import and export experienced growth of 17.6% and 24.5%, respectively. The EAX index showed a 50.18% increase in maritime freight costs on the Asia > Mexico > East Coast of South America route, due to the Chinese New Year festivities.
This historic TEU movement in January signals continuous growth in global maritime freight transportation, prompting investments and adaptations in port infrastructures to increase operational capacity.
