Baltimore Incident: Vessel that destroyed bridge holds 56 containers with hazardous cargo
In a startling emergency at the port of Baltimore, the container ship Dalí, operated by Maersk and chartered by Synergy Maritime Group, collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, completely destroying it. Despite the impact, it has been confirmed that of the 4,700 containers on board, only two fell into the water. Even more impressive is that among the cargo, which includes 56 containers with hazardous materials, no spills have been reported so far.
The United States Coast Guard has stated that inspections conducted show no evidence of spills of hazardous products or fuel spills into the Patapsco River. Vice Admiral Peter Gautier emphasized that “there is no threat to the public from the hazardous materials on board” and that exhaustive analyses have been conducted to ensure safety.
While efforts are underway to disentangle the vessel from the bridge, which currently has its bow resting on the bottom due to the weight of the debris, it has been confirmed that the ship remains stable, though it still contains over 1.5 million gallons of fuel oil and lubricating oil. Salvage plans have been implemented by Resolve Marine Incorporated to address the situation effectively.
This incident has blocked the shipping channel in Baltimore, causing significant disruptions since the vessel lost power and collided with a bridge support column, resulting in the tragic deaths of six roadway workers and the collapse of the bridge over the Patapsco River.
