Crane Fire and Ship Collision Reported at IPM Terminal in Altamira
The terminal of Infraestructura Portuaria Mexicana (IPM), a subsidiary of Promotora y Operadora de Infraestructura (Pinfra), experienced a significant incident last Wednesday. A fire on a mobile crane caused its collapse and a collision with a cargo ship at the port of Altamira. According to the Volunteer Firefighters of Tamaulipas A.C., the fire may have originated from an oil leak in the crane’s engine.
Although no official statements have been issued by the company or the Administración del Sistema Portuario Nacional (Asipona) Altamira, IPM, established in 1994 in response to the privatization of Mexican ports, operates the Terminal Multiusos II in Altamira. It provides a variety of services, from loading and unloading containers to storage and attention to shipping lines.
The port of Altamira has shown solid performance, surpassing 20.8 million tons operated in 2023 through its 14 specialized terminals.
