Global Air Cargo Takes Off at the Start of 2024
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported a significant 18.4% growth in air cargo movement in January 2024 compared to the same period last year.
Willie Walsh, the Director General of IATA, attributed this growth to the flourishing e-commerce sector, which has been driving demand for air cargo since the last quarter of 2023. This surge marks the highest annual growth in cargo tonne-kilometers since the summer of 2021. Asia-Pacific led the growth with a 24.6% increase, while North American carriers showed the weakest performance with a 9.3% year-on-year volume increase.
Walsh mentioned the uncertainty regarding China’s economic slowdown as a potential factor that could impact this growth, a topic to be discussed at the IATA World Cargo Symposium in Hong Kong next week, focusing on digitization, efficiency, and sustainability.
