International Maritime Cargo with Moderate Momentum in Mexico
The beginning of 2024 has witnessed a moderate yet positive growth in international cargo movement through Mexican ports, with the port of Veracruz standing out as a leader in cargo volume. According to the monthly statistics from the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine (CGPMM), Mexican ports handled over 22.6 million tons of cargo in January 2024, marking a 2.3% increase compared to the same period the previous year.
Maritime cargo accounted for the majority of this volume, with over 18.5 million tons moved, also reflecting a 2.3% year-on-year growth. Meanwhile, coastal shipping reached just over four million tons, a similar increase of 2.3%.
In January 2024, the port of Veracruz led the movement of goods in terms of volume, with over 2.55 million tons, closely followed by Coatzacoalcos and other ports along the Mexican coastline. Sergio Álvarez Ramírez, CEO of GOLMEX, noted that the demand for container movement is experiencing a steady albeit moderate growth, prompting an evaluation to expand logistics operations infrastructure to accommodate the growing maritime cargo.
Both on the Atlantic and Pacific sides, logistics operators are gearing up to meet the continuous demand for maritime transport, demonstrating a commitment to growth and efficiency in foreign trade in Mexico.
