Maersk is reportedly contemplating new order for methanol-powered ships
The order would be added to that of 2021 which included 12 ships of this type of about 16,000 TEUs.
Maersk, which signed a methanol-powered vessel contract with Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) last year, is expected to order more such vessels, which are worth more than $154.8 million each. reports BusinessKorea
The contract signed last year contemplates the construction of 12 methanol-propelled container ships, of about 16,000 TEUs each. Maersk is in talks with KSOE, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for the additional contract.
“The new contract depends on when the new vessels are due to be delivered,” an industry source said, adding: “The three shipbuilders’ order book is already full for two to three years and delivery to Maersk is likely either in 2025 or 2026”.
The average price for methanol-powered vessels was $175 million when the contract was signed last year. The price to be agreed in the new contract is estimated at US$183 million. The new contract will likely be for 12 vessels, including four to six boats similar to last year’s contract.
