New Modality of Container Theft Detected
Cargo theft in Mexico has taken a concerning turn, with the detection of thefts directly from containers in transit from plants to ports. This new modality has led to legal actions abroad against Mexican exporters, who struggle to fulfill contracts due to incomplete shipments.
Norma Becerra, president of the Mexican Association of Shipping Agents, highlights that the most affected products include food, groceries, construction materials, automotive products, medicines, hydrocarbons, clothing, and footwear, especially those sensitive to informal markets. Becerra also mentions that containers are marked from their origin to be later stolen, although specific figures on this situation are not available.
In 2023, the maritime port sector moved millions of containers, with a 6.2% increase in thefts between January and November compared to the previous year.
