Mexican ports handle just 0.9% more cargo in 1Q23
The ports of Mexico handled 0.9% more cargo in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year, according to data from the country’s Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT). The total volume of cargo handled during this period was 329.5 million tons, an increase of just 2.9 million tons from 1Q22. Of the total cargo handled, 173.4 million tons were imports, an increase of 3.1%, while exports accounted for 106.3 million tons, a decrease of 1.1%. The remaining 49.8 million tons corresponded to cabotage, which saw a 2.2% increase. The ports of Veracruz, Altamira, and Lázaro Cárdenas were the ones that handled the highest cargo volumes during the first quarter of the year, with 27.4%, 14.2%, and 13.8% respectively.
