Mexico Is Late in Filing a Complaint with USMCA Over Blockades in Texas: COMCE
The Mexican Council of Foreign Trade (Comce) is urging the Mexican government to take stronger action in response to the cargo truck inspections implemented by the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, at the border crossings to his state. These inspections are causing delays and obstructions in bilateral trade between Mexico and the United States, affecting all three countries involved in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
The President of Comce Occidente, Miguel Ángel Landeros Volquarts, has expressed concern over Mexico’s lack of action and states that the country should have filed a complaint with the USMCA much earlier. He emphasizes that Mexico should address this issue immediately as it goes against the commitments set in the USMCA and hinders bilateral trade. Despite Mexico sending diplomatic notes on the matter, it has not yet demonstrated an adequate strategy to resolve the problem.
The thorough inspections carried out by the Texas Department of Public Safety on cargo vehicles crossing the Colombia Bridge have resulted in queues of up to 6 hours and have impacted export volumes. Landeros Volquarts highlights that this issue should be discussed unilaterally, and both sides need to make decisions to address it.
Furthermore, he warns that if the situation is not resolved promptly, Texas could impose costly additional inspections at other border crossings. In terms of economic impact, it is estimated that it could amount to billions of dollars.
